Florence Edwardine Sperling, age 99, of Peoria, passed away on Friday, July 23, 2010 at Proctor Endowment Home in Peoria.
She was born on June 12, 1911 in Peoria, Illinois to Edward G. and Florence (Randall) Sperling.
Edwardine attended Bradley University as well as the University of Wisconsin from which she received a Master’s Degree in English literature. She then became a teacher in the Peoria School System for 41 years and served as chairperson of the Woodruff High School English and Speech Departments for seven years. Edwardine was also chosen Teacher of the Year for Peoria County in 1974 -1975.
Edwardine was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, Phi Beta Phi Sorority, Methodist Service League, Peoria Women’s Club, Peoria Retired Teachers and the I.B. Chapter of P.E.O. Sisterhood. She also volunteered at Children’s Home of Peoria.
Services will be held on Thursday, July 29, 2010 at 11am at Cumerford-Hurd Funeral Home in Peoria. Rev. Dr. Randall Saxon will be officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be held at Parkview Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Shriner’s Children’s Hospital, her church, or a charity of the donor’s choice. Online condolences may be made at www.cumerford.com.
